What Participants Say After Completing a Programme
Feedback from managers, operations staff and business owners who have been through Copperdesk programmes in Penang.

I did the Operations Track because I kept inheriting processes that nobody had thought through properly. The mapping framework alone was worth the eleven weeks — I used it on three different workflows in my department within a month of finishing. The clinic sessions were short but direct, which suited me. I did not need more talking, I needed someone to tell me what I had missed.

The Owner-Manager Programme is long. That is worth saying upfront. Seven months is a genuine commitment when you are running a business at the same time. But the structure around the peer board made it worth it — six people at similar stages, meeting with a proper agenda, not just venting. I came out with a clearer picture of where my business needs to get to before I can step back from the day-to-day.

Four weeks sounds brief, and the Communication Intensive is intense enough that you feel it. The live drafting sessions are the part I did not expect — writing something on the spot and having it read back at you is uncomfortable in a productive way. My email length dropped by a third after the programme and I stopped getting follow-up questions asking what I actually meant.

I was a bit sceptical about whether an eleven-week programme could actually change how I worked. The process I mapped during the track had been running the same way for four years. We found two handoff points that were adding two days of waiting time for no real reason. The changes we made in the third month are still running. The toolkit is still on my desk.

The part of the Owner-Manager Programme I found most useful was the section on delegation — specifically what the school calls "letting go." I had been doing the kind of delegating where you hand something over and then check on it every day anyway. The material was direct about why that does not scale. I have since hired a first layer of management in my business for the first time.

My team writes a lot of reports that go upward. After the Communication Intensive, I rewrote our standard report template based on what I had worked through in the programme. The first set of reports we submitted under the new format came back with fewer revision requests than any I can remember in three years. The feedback on my own submissions was thorough — more than I expected for a four-week course.

How Participants Applied What They Learned
Throughput bottleneck in a service department
A department head in a shared-services centre was seeing consistent delays between the intake and processing stages of a high-volume request workflow. The team knew there was a problem but had no language or method for describing or measuring it.
Process mapping across the eleven weeks
The participant mapped the end-to-end workflow in week two of the track, identified three handoff points adding waiting time, and used the toolkit's measurement framework to quantify the delay. Weeks five through nine were spent redesigning the handoff structure and testing it with a subset of requests.
Average processing time reduced by 31%
The redesigned workflow reduced average end-to-end processing time by 31% over the first six weeks it ran. The standard work documentation produced during the track was adopted as the department's operating reference. The change was sustained without additional headcount.
"I had been managing that process for two years. It took eleven weeks of looking at it with a proper framework to see what was actually causing the delay." — Operations Track participant, Penang
Owner-dependence in a growing F&B business
A founder running two food-and-beverage outlets in George Town was involved in every operational decision. Revenue had grown but margins had not, and the owner could not take a day off without something requiring their attention. They enrolled in the Owner-Manager Programme specifically because the dependency had become a ceiling.
Seven months working on the business structure
The programme's delegation and hiring modules gave the participant a framework for identifying which decisions genuinely required the owner and which were being escalated out of habit. Working with the programme adviser and the peer board, the participant developed a hiring specification for a first-level operations role and a handover plan across five functional areas.
First management hire in place within four months
The participant made their first management hire in the fourth month of the programme. By the end of the seven months, three of the five handover areas were operating under the new manager. The owner reported being out of the business for a full week for the first time in five years of operating.
"The peer board was the thing I did not expect to value as much as I did. Hearing how other owners had handled the same problems made the programme feel real rather than theoretical." — Owner-Manager participant, George Town
